High Peaks, Pure Earth: Collected Writings on Tibetan History and Culture
Hugh Richardson Edited by Michael Aris
Hugh Richardson, head of the last British and first Indian missions to Tibet, is recognized as the Grand Old Man of Tibetan Studies. This volume brings together some 64 of his major contributions to Tibetan scholarship written over the course of nearly 60 years, including three hitherto unpublished articles. Illustrated with diagrams, maps and the author's own photographs, these volumes will serve as a lasting monument to Richardson's powerful erudition and humanity in the cause of Tibetan scholarship and identity. The first volume contains, in Part 1, 26 articles on the crucial and formative phase of Tibet's history in the seventh to ninth centuries. Part 2 contains a further nine articles on key historical sites and inscriptions. The second volume presents, in Part 3, 14 miscellaneous articles on Tibetan history down to the twentieth century. Part 4 reproduces Richardson's Tibetan Precis, an extremely rare "secret" publication containing classified information summarizing British relations with Tibet. In Part 5 are found 14 essays containing the author's personal testimonies and recollection of life in Tibet.
